Hebrews 12:14-29

(Hebrews 12:14-29)

Follow peace with all men, and holiness, without which no man shall see the Lord:  Looking diligently lest any man fail of the grace of God; lest any root of bitterness springing up trouble you, and thereby many be defiled;  Lest there be any fornicator, or profane person, as Esau, who for one morsel of meat sold his birthright.  For ye know how that afterward, when he would have inherited the blessing, he was rejected: for he found no place of repentance, though he sought it carefully with tears.  For ye are not come unto the mount that might be touched, and that burned with fire, nor unto blackness, and darkness, and tempest, And the sound of a trumpet, and the voice of words; which voice they that heard intreated that the word should not be spoken to them any more: (For they could not endure that which was commanded, And if so much as a beast touch the mountain, it shall be stoned, or thrust through with a dart: And so terrible was the sight, that Moses said, I exceedingly fear and quake:) But ye are come unto mount Sion, and unto the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem, and to an innumerable company of angels, To the general assembly and church of the firstborn, which are written in heaven, and to God the Judge of all, and to the spirits of just men made perfect, And to Jesus the mediator of the new covenant, and to the blood of sprinkling, that speaketh better things than that of Abel. See that ye refuse not him that speaketh. For if they escaped not who refused him that spake on earth, much more shall not we escape, if we turn away from him that speaketh from heaven: Whose voice then shook the earth: but now he hath promised, saying, Yet once more I shake not the earth only, but also heaven. And this word, Yet once more, signifieth the removing of those things that are shaken, as of things that are made, that those things which cannot be shaken may remain. Wherefore we receiving a kingdom which cannot be moved, let us have grace, whereby we may serve God acceptably with reverence and godly fear:  For our God is a consuming fire.

It is a word of exhortation for applying faith to present life. The Bible said in that way, follow peace and holiness with everyone. Being in peace with everyone is the way of faith that the elders of faith in Chapter 11 walked through. The advanced people of faith in Chapter 11 are those who have kept their lives without compromise to keep their faith. However, Chapter 12 tells us to be at peace with everyone. Peace here doesn't mean to get along without contention. Peace in the Bible is perfect peace. The Bible says the key to getting that peace. In Proverbs 3:1-2My son, forget not my law; but let thine heart keep my commandments: For length of days, and long life, and peace, shall they add to thee.

Without obedience to the Word of God, humans can never enjoy peace of mind or peace. It is possible to make peace with everyone by using God's Word as a standard and obedience to God's Word. The Bible says that a person without faith is a person who cannot reach the grace of God. Failure to reach God's grace does not mean that we are unable to reach God's grace despite hard work and hard work, but those who reject God's grace or take it lightly.

After a 40-year wilderness life, Moses preaches a testament he left to the Israelites in the land of Moab with Canaan in front. Lest there should be among you man, or woman, or family, or tribe, whose heart turneth away this day from the LORD our God, to go and serve the gods of these nations; lest there should be among you a root that beareth gall and wormwood; Moses' expression of bitter root is related to idolatry. The behavior of the Old Testament Israel, which kept God away for material abundance and served other gods, is the image of the New Testament believers who are light on God's grace and do not obey the Word to fill the desires of the world, and it is the bitter root that shakes the whole church.

Suddenly, Moses described the old covenant being made on Mount Sinai recorded in Exodus 19:9-23. It is said that it is burning, somber, dark, stormy, trumpets, and terrifying words, so even Moses was scared. It was a warning of judgment against disobedience to the word of God that the earth was shaken so that all the Israelites trembled when they made a covenant on Mount Sinai. The God said that not only the earth but the heavens would shake once more. This is the final judgment.

And after that, God will complete the kingdom of God that will never be shaken. Judgment on disobedience was not the only thing in the old covenant. Those who do not receive the new covenant, the word of Jesus, by grace, but who consider it lighter than the things of the world, are like Esau, fornicators, those who do not reach the grace of God through the bitter roots of the community, and they have no way to escape disaster.
